¿Cómo se da un consejo en inglés?
Consejo
Estructura
Sujeto + should + verbo base. Negativa: shouldn’t. Pregunta: Should + sujeto + verbo base. Con ought to también va el verbo base: You ought to rest.
| Estructura | Ejemplo | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| should | You should see a doctor. | Deberías ir al médico. |
| shouldn’t | You shouldn’t drink so much coffee. | No deberías beber tanto café. |
| ought to | You ought to rest today. | Deberías descansar hoy. |
| Why don’t you…? | Why don’t you take a taxi? | ¿Por qué no tomas un taxi? |
| Should I…? | Should I bring my passport? | ¿Debería llevar mi pasaporte? |
¿Qué consejos de salud puedo dar?
Ejemplos
I have a headache. — You should lie down in a dark room. (Deberías acostarte en un cuarto oscuro.)
I have a cold. — You ought to drink hot tea, and you shouldn’t go out.
¿Y los consejos de viaje?
I’m going to Edinburgh in March. — You should take a raincoat. Why don’t you visit the castle on a weekday? You ought to book your tickets early.
Pregunta What should I do? o Do you think I should go?. Para responder con una opinión, usa I think you should… o I don’t think you should….
No digas You should to go ni Do I should call?: después de should va el verbo base y la pregunta empieza por Should I…?. Además, advice es incontable: no existe an advice ni advices. Di some advice o a piece of advice.
El consejo de Leo
Si quieres sonar suave, empieza con Why don’t you…? o con I think you should…. Así tu consejo suena a idea amiga y no a orden.
Nota cultural
- Advice es incontable: some advice o a piece of advice, nunca advices.
- Para pedir consejo: What should I do? o Should I…?

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre should y must?
Should es un consejo suave y must es una obligación fuerte. You should rest recomienda descansar; You must rest suena a una orden o a una necesidad.
¿Se puede decir ought not to?
Existe, pero es poco frecuente y formal. En la conversación diaria se prefiere shouldn’t: You shouldn’t eat so much sugar.
¿Cómo se pronuncia should?
Se pronuncia /shud/. La l no se pronuncia, igual que en would y could. Shouldn’t suena /shudnt/.
¿Cuándo uso Why don’t you?
Cuando quieres hacer una sugerencia amable: Why don’t you call him?
Con I think you should + verbo base, o con Why don’t you + verbo base. Para decir que algo no conviene, usa I don’t think you should…
