When a small software company in Dublin switched to a four-day working week two years ago, many clients expected its productivity to collapse. The opposite happened. Employees, who still received full pay, used Fridays to rest, study or spend time with their families, and managers noticed fewer sick days and more focus during the remaining four days. Critics argue that the model suits creative offices but would be impossible in hospitals, shops or factories, where someone must always be present. Supporters reply that these sectors could organise rotating shifts instead. What is certain is that the debate has moved from the margins to national newspapers, and several governments are now funding trials to find out whether the experiment can work on a large scale.
