I suggest that he be on time). Además, were it not for, had it not been for y lest aportan precisión en cartas, informes y discursos de nivel C1.

I suggest that he be on time.
| Disparador | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| suggest, recommend, propose | I recommend that Mateo take the earlier train. — Recomiendo que Mateo tome… |
| insist, demand, require, request | The council demands that the road be closed. |
| it is essential / vital / imperative / crucial that | It is essential that every guest sign the register. |
Regla
La negación se forma con not antes del verbo, sin auxiliar: I insist that she not be disturbed. El inglés británico a menudo añade should: I suggest that he should be on time. Las dos formas son correctas.
¿Cómo funcionan were it not for, had it not been for y were I to?
Were it not for your help, we would have failed. — Si no fuera por tu ayuda. Para el pasado: Had it not been for the fog, we would have landed on time. Para una hipótesis futura: Were the council to refuse, residents would protest.
She hurried lest she miss the ferry. No añadas otro not.
Fórmulas fijas
- So be it. — Que así sea.
- Come what may, we will launch on Monday. — Pase lo que pase.
- If need be, I’ll stay late. — Si hace falta.
- Be that as it may, the result stands.
No digas *I suggest that he is, *I suggest him to go ni *lest he doesn’t miss. Lo correcto: I suggest that he be there, I suggest that he go, lest he miss.
Nota cultural
El inglés americano usa el subjuntivo mandativo con naturalidad en la prensa y en las leyes: The judge ordered that the records be sealed. El británico prefiere should be sealed.
El consejo de Leo
Leí un cartel en un museo de Edimburgo: «It is requested that visitors not touch the exhibits».
- La negación es not + forma base, sin do.
- Were it not for = si no fuera por; had it not been for = si no hubiera sido por.
- Lest ya es negativo: lest he miss, nunca *lest he doesn’t miss.
Subjuntivo y fórmulas formales avanzadas: preguntas frecuentes
I suggest that she go. Si suggest significa «sugerir como hecho», usa el indicativo: The data suggests that prices are falling.
¿Cómo se forma la negación del subjuntivo?
Con not delante del verbo en forma base, sin do: We recommend that he not travel. En británico puede aparecer con should: should not travel.
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre were it not for y had it not been for?
Were it not for habla del presente o de una condición general; had it not been for se refiere a algo que no ocurrió en el pasado. Ambas equivalen a «si no fuera por / si no hubiera sido por».
¿Se puede usar lest en conversación?
Casi nunca. Es muy formal o literaria. En lenguaje cotidiano se dice so that … won’t o in case: Speak quietly so that nobody hears.
¿Por qué se dice I wish he were y no I wish he was?
If I were you, I wish he were here. En habla informal se acepta was, pero en escritura formal usa were.
