For more than a century, Scotland’s economy relied on coal, shipbuilding and, later, North Sea oil. When the mines closed in the 1980s, many communities lost their main source of work. Today, the country is turning to the wind and the sea. Wind farms now produce a large share of its electricity, and engineers are testing underwater turbines in the waters off the northern coast. Supporters say the change will create thousands of green jobs, but some villagers complain that huge turbines spoil the landscape.
