Le contrôle texte littéraire

The house had been empty for years, and it looked at me the way an old dog looks at a stranger: patient, tired, a little suspicious. I pushed the gate. It groaned as if I had woken it. In the garden, the roses had grown wild, climbing over the wall like thieves, and the grass reached my knees. I do not know why I had come. My mother used to say that houses remember everything, and that night, standing in the cold, I almost believed her. Somewhere upstairs, a shutter banged once, twice, and then there was only silence, thick as snow.
