Britain has fewer soldiers than in the past, yet its influence abroad remains considerable. The BBC World Service reaches hundreds of millions of listeners, universities attract students from every continent, and British actors, writers and musicians shape global tastes.

Political scientists call this influence “soft power”, a term suggesting that attraction can be as effective as force. Critics, however, warn that culture alone cannot replace diplomacy and that the image of a stable monarchy may hide real social inequalities.

  1. Why is Britain’s influence surprising?
  2. Give two examples of British soft power.
  3. How do political scientists define soft power?
  4. What do critics say?
Exercice 6 : Essai court (4 points)

Écrire un texte argumenté de 100 à 120 mots : la culture est-elle un outil d’influence aussi efficace que la force ?
