The new library, whose opening was delayed twice, finally welcomed its first visitors on Saturday. Around 900 people, half of whom were children, queued outside before nine.
The architect, with whom the mayor argued for months over the budget, said she was delighted. “Isn’t it wonderful that a town of this size can offer such a space?” she asked. Visitors who had come from nearby villages said they would return, and many promised to help one another by sharing books.
