Twenty years ago, most people learnt the news from a newspaper or a television bulletin written by professionals. Today, anyone with a phone can broadcast an opinion to thousands within seconds.
This democratisation of speech has benefits: previously ignored voices can be heard. Yet the speed of communication favours emotion over accuracy, and algorithms tend to show people what they already believe. Experts therefore argue that media education should be taught in every school.
- How did people get the news twenty years ago?
- What is the main advantage of today’s situation?
- What is the main danger mentioned?
- What do experts recommend?
