- I’d like to talk about the Windrush scandal, which shocked Britain in 2018.
- After the Second World War, thousands of people from the Caribbean came to Britain to help rebuild the country; as citizens of the Empire, they had the right to settle there.
- In 2018, journalists revealed that many of them had been treated as illegal immigrants because they had no papers and the Home Office had destroyed their landing cards.
- Some lost their jobs, their homes or their access to healthcare, and a few were even deported; the Home Secretary resigned and the government apologised.
- In my opinion, controlling immigration is legitimate; however, this scandal shows that a state must never forget the people who helped build it.
