In 1803, the United States bought a huge territory from France. President Jefferson wanted to know what was inside it, so he asked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore it. They left in 1804 with about forty men. After two years, they came back with maps, drawings and notes about plants and animals. Their journey opened the way for thousands of settlers who moved west.
