In 1951, a Black girl named Linda Brown had to walk a long way to a school for Black children, although a white school stood close to her home. Her father, supported by civil rights lawyers, took the case to court. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that separate schools for Black and white pupils were unconstitutional. The decision did not end segregation overnight: many Southern states resisted, and federal troops were sometimes needed to protect Black students as they entered schools. Nevertheless, the ruling became a symbol of equality under the law.
