The United Kingdom is a union of four nations, each with its own traditions. Since the devolution reforms of 1998, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have had their own assemblies, which decide on health, education and local transport.
Yet the balance remains delicate. In 2014, Scots voted against independence by 55 percent, but Brexit reopened the debate because a majority in Scotland had wanted to remain in the European Union. Supporters of the union say that the four nations are stronger together, whereas nationalists argue that decisions should be taken closer to the people.
- What happened in 1998?
- Which areas do the assemblies control?
- Why did Brexit reopen the debate in Scotland?
- What argument do nationalists use?
Écrire un texte argumenté de 100 à 120 mots : l’identité des quatre nations est-elle compatible avec un seul État ?
