Cours d'anglais 6e : Les prépositions de lieu
Note cette fiche

Où est passé le chat ? Sous le lit ! Pour répondre en anglais, il te faut les prépositions de lieu : in, on, under, next to, between, in front of, behind et above. Avec there is et there are, elles te permettent de décrire ta chambre, ta classe ou n’importe quel endroit.

indansThe pens are in the box.Les stylos sont dans la boîte.
onsur (avec contact)The book is on the desk.Le livre est sur le bureau.
undersousThe cat is under the bed.Le chat est sous le lit.
next toà côté deThe lamp is next to the bed.La lampe est à côté du lit.
betweenentreI sit between Tom and Lisa.Je suis assis entre Tom et Lisa.
in front ofdevantThe bus stops in front of the school.Le bus s’arrête devant l’école.
behindderrièreMy bag is behind the door.Mon sac est derrière la porte.
aboveau-dessus de (sans contact)The clock is above the board.L’horloge est au-dessus du tableau.
Pour retenir

on et above veulent tous deux dire « au-dessus », mais on suppose un contact (le livre touche la table) et above pas de contact (la lampe flotte au-dessus du bureau). between s’emploie avec deux repères reliés par and : between the bed and the desk.

Dire où se trouve quelque chose

Formation

Sujet + be + préposition + the + nom : The ball is on the shelf. (La balle est sur l’étagère.) My shoes are under the chair. (Mes chaussures sont sous la chaise.)

Pour demander où se trouve quelque chose, on utilise Where et on répond souvent avec it ou they :

Mum: Where is your school bag?

Ethan: It’s behind the door.

Mum: And where are your trainers?

Ethan: They’re under my bed… I think!

Attention

next to et in front of s’écrivent en plusieurs mots : n’oublie ni to ni of. On dit next to the window et in front of the house, jamais next the window ou in front the house.

There is et there are : « il y a »

SingulierPluriel
AffirmationThere is a lamp on my desk.
(forme courte : there’s)
There are two windows in my room.
NégationThere isn’t a TV in my room. There aren’t any posters on the wall.
QuestionIs there a cat under the bed?Are there books on the shelf?
Réponses courtesYes, there is. / No, there isn’t.Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.
Erreur fréquente

Ne traduis pas « il y a » par it is ou par he has. There is a dog in the garden. (Il y a un chien dans le jardin.) Et accorde bien : there is devant un nom singulier, there are dès que le nom est au pluriel : There are two cats.

Décrire sa chambre

Pour décrire une pièce, on commence par dire ce qu’il y a avec there is / there are, puis on précise la place de chaque objet avec une préposition.

This is my bedroom. It’s small but cosy. There is a bed next to the window and there is a lamp above my bed. My desk is in front of the wall, and there are three shelves above it. There are posters on the wall and there is a green rug on the floor. My guitar is between the wardrobe and the door. And where is my cat? He’s under the bed, of course!

Vocabulaire clé

on the wall (au mur), on the floor (par terre), in the corner (dans le coin), in the picture (sur l’image).

  • In the bed ou on the bed : in bed quand on est sous la couette, on the bed quand on est assis dessus.

  • in dans, on sur, under sous, next to à côté de, between entre, in front of devant, behind derrière, above au-dessus de.
  • Phrase type : The cat is under the bed. Question : Where is the cat?
  • There is + singulier, there are + pluriel ; Is there…? / Are there…? pour poser la question.
