Every November, the small town of Ashby holds a quiet ceremony in front of its war memorial. For decades, only the oldest residents attended, and many young people thought the event had little to do with their lives. Then, three years ago, a history teacher asked her pupils to research the names engraved on the stone. Some of them discovered that a great-grandfather had been among the soldiers who never came home. One boy found his ancestor’s letters in an attic and read them aloud at the ceremony.
Since then, attendance has tripled. « We used to think of the past as something in books, » says Hannah, sixteen. « Now I walk past the memorial every day and I know whose stories are behind the names. » The town council has recently decided to digitise the letters so that future generations can read them online.
