In the early twentieth century, British women were not given the right to vote. The suffragettes demanded that the law be changed, and many of them were arrested, imprisoned and force-fed. Their campaign was often laughed at by politicians. In 1918, some women over thirty were finally granted the vote, but it was not until 1928 that women were allowed to vote on the same terms as men. Today, historians insist that their courage be remembered, and it is said that the movement changed British democracy for ever.
