Correction de l’exercice 1 : Choix du modal (4 points)0,5 point par réponse. 1. can’t. 2. must. 3. might ou may ou could. 4. is likely to ou is bound to (la locution remplace le modal). 5. can’t. 6. bound to ou likely to. 7. must ou may. 8. might ou may.
1 point par phrase. 1. He must be lying. 2. They might have missed the bus. (modal + have + participe passé). 3. She can’t have taken the money. 4. The shop may be closed on Sundays.
1 point par réponse. 1. He deduces that the thief can’t have used the door. 2. Cole mentions muddy marks on the wall. 3. The owner might have left the window open herself. 4. They decide to ask the neighbour. Retirer 0,5 point si la phrase n’est pas complète.
1 point par phrase. 1. He must be hungry: he hasn’t eaten anything since this morning. 2. She can’t have heard the bell; she may/might have been asleep. 3. They are unlikely to arrive before noon. (ou It is unlikely that they will arrive…).
Réponse modèle : The driver must have left in a hurry, because the doors are open. He might have run out of petrol, or perhaps someone could have forced him to stop. It can’t have been abandoned for long: the engine is still warm. The police are likely to find clues in the glove box.
Critères : quatre expressions variées (2 points), formes correctes (modal + have + participe) (1 point), cohérence (1 point), langue et longueur (1 point).
Barème et conseils
Total : 20 points. Au-dessus de 14, la gradation de certitude est maîtrisée ; entre 10 et 14, revoir le passé des modaux ; sous 10, reprendre must, may, might et can’t. Erreurs fréquentes : mustn’t pour exprimer la déduction négative, oubli de have, ajout de to après un modal.
