Exercice 4 : la république ou le nord ?

Lis chaque information et dis si elle concerne the Republic of Ireland ou Northern Ireland.

Exercice 5 : complète le texte

Complète avec les mots suivants : emigrated – famine – independent – border – peace – joined – potatoes – republic.

Exercice 6 : remets l’histoire dans l’ordre

Classe ces événements du plus ancien au plus récent.

  1. The Troubles end with an agreement.

  4. Rebels fight in Dublin at Easter.
  5. The Irish Free State is created.
  6. Ireland becomes a member of the EEC.
Exercice 7 : la lettre d’un émigré

Lis cette lettre imaginaire, puis réponds en anglais.

Boston, 12th May 1848

Dear Mother,

The crossing was long and terrible. We spent six weeks on the ship, and many passengers were sick. Now I live in a small room with three other men from County Cork. I work on the docks from six in the morning until eight at night. The work is hard, but I earn a dollar a day. I am sending you five dollars in this letter for food. I miss our green fields and the sea, but there is no future at home while the potatoes are rotting. One day, I hope, you and little Mary will come here too.

Exercice 8 : pose la question

Écris la question au prétérit qui correspond à chaque réponse. Le mot interrogatif est donné.

  1. (When) Ireland became independent in 1922.
  2. (Where) The Easter Rising took place in Dublin.
  3. (What) A disease destroyed the potatoes.
  4. (Where) Many Irish people emigrated to America.
  5. (When) Ireland joined the EEC in 1973.

Exercice 9 : corrige les erreurs

Chaque phrase contient une erreur d’information ou de langue. Réécris-la correctement.

Exercice 10 : traduis en anglais
  1. L’Irlande est une île.
  2. Belfast est la capitale de l’Irlande du Nord.
  3. Beaucoup d’Irlandais ont émigré aux États-Unis.
  4. L’Irlande est devenue indépendante en 1922.
  5. L’accord a apporté la paix.
