Exercices de conditionnel : hypothèses et inversion en seconde

Ces exercices de conditionnel vous font passer du possible à l’irréel du passé, puis à l’inversion du style soutenu. Ils sont classés du plus simple au plus exigeant : faites-les dans l’ordre et vérifiez ensuite vos réponses dans le corrigé.

Onze exercices de conditionnel progressifs

Exercice 1 : le bon temps après if

Mettez le verbe entre parenthèses à la forme qui convient (présent ou prétérit).

  1. If it (rain) ___ tomorrow, we’ll cancel the picnic.
  2. If I (be) ___ taller, I would play basketball.
  3. Water boils if you (heat) ___ it to 100°C.
  4. If she (have) ___ more time, she would learn Japanese.
  5. Unless you (hurry) ___, you will miss the bus.
  6. If they (offer) ___ me the job, I would accept it at once, but I doubt they will.
  7. I’ll lend you my bike as long as you (bring) ___ it back tonight.
  8. If we lived by the sea, we (go) ___ swimming every day.
Exercice 2 : l’irréel du passé

Conjuguez les deux verbes : past perfect dans la subordonnée, would have + participe passé dans la principale.

  1. If you (tell) ___ me, I (help) ___ you.
  2. She (not / fail) ___ the test if she (revise) ___.
  3. If the alarm (ring) ___, we (not / be) ___ late.
  4. If Columbus (not / sail) ___ west, he (not / reach) ___ the Caribbean.
  5. We (win) ___ the match if our goalkeeper (not / get) ___ injured.
  6. If I (know) ___ it was your birthday, I (buy) ___ you a present.
Exercice 3 : passer à l’inversion

Réécrivez chaque phrase en supprimant if et en faisant l’inversion.

  1. If she had known the truth, she would have stayed.
  2. If I were in your shoes, I would apologise.
  3. If you should need any help, call me.
  4. If they had left earlier, they would have caught the train.
  5. If the weather were better, we would eat outside.
  6. If we hadn’t met, my life would have been different.
  7. If anyone should call, take a message.
Exercice 4 : revenir à if

Réécrivez ces phrases soutenues avec if.

  1. Had I seen the sign, I would have stopped.
  2. Were he more patient, he would be a great teacher.
  3. Should the flight be delayed, passengers will be informed by text message.
  4. Had it not been for her courage, they would have drowned.
  5. Were I to win the lottery, I would travel the world.
Exercice 5 : associer condition et conséquence

Associez chaque début de phrase (1 à 6) à la fin qui convient (a à f).

  1. If you heat ice,
  2. If I had brought my camera,
  3. If you see Tom,
  4. If I were rich,
  5. Unless you apologise,
  6. Had she campaigned harder,
  • a. I would have taken a photo of the eclipse.
  • b. it melts.
  • c. I would take a year off to travel.
  • d. tell him to call me.
  • e. she would have been elected.
  • f. she won’t forgive you.
Exercice 6 : chasser l’erreur

Chaque phrase contient une erreur. Recopiez-la correctement.

  1. If I would have money, I would buy a car.
  2. If it will snow, we will build a snowman.
  3. If he had studied, he would passed the exam.
  4. Hadn’t she called, we would have been worried.
  5. Unless you don’t stop, I’ll call the police.
  6. If I was you, I would see a doctor. (registre écrit soigné)
Exercice 7 : traduire en anglais

Traduisez en anglais.

  1. Si tu viens samedi, nous irons au cinéma.
  2. Si j’étais toi, je refuserais.
  3. S’il avait plu, le match aurait été annulé.
  4. Si nous avions pris un taxi, nous serions à l’heure maintenant.
  5. Si elle avait su, elle ne serait pas venue. (avec inversion)
  6. À moins de travailler, tu échoueras.
Exercice 8 : traduire en français

Traduisez en français.

  1. If I had wings, I would fly to you.
  2. Had the doctor arrived sooner, the man would have survived.
  3. Should you change your mind, let me know.
  4. We’ll go hiking provided it doesn’t rain.
  5. If she hadn’t missed the plane, she would be in New York now.
Exercice 9 : compréhension, les deux portes

Lisez le texte puis répondez en anglais.

Maya stood in front of two doors. Ten years earlier, she had turned down a scholarship in Boston to stay with her family in Leeds. “Had I accepted,” she often thought, “I would have become an architect. If I were an architect today, I would design green buildings.” But she had also met Sam in Leeds, and if she had left, she would never have met him. Behind the first door, an old voice whispered: “Should you open me, you will live the life you missed.” Behind the second, she heard her children laughing. Maya smiled. If she opened the first door, she would lose everything she loved. She opened the second one.

  1. What did Maya turn down ten years earlier?
  2. What would she have become if she had accepted?
  3. Quote the sentence with an inversion and rewrite it with if.
  4. Rewrite the old voice’s words with if.
  5. Give the type of each hypothesis: a) If I were an architect today, I would design green buildings. b) If she had left, she would never have met him.
  6. Which door did she open, and why?
Exercice 10 : regrets et conséquences

Combinez les deux phrases en une hypothèse irréelle (du passé ou mixte).

  1. I didn’t set my alarm. I was late.
  2. She didn’t take her umbrella. She got wet.
  3. He doesn’t speak Spanish. He can’t work in Madrid.
  4. We missed the last bus. We are stuck here now.
  5. They didn’t book a table. They had to wait for an hour.
  6. I didn’t study medicine. I’m not a doctor today.
Exercice 11 : à vous d’imaginer

Complétez ces phrases à votre manière, avec une principale correcte.

  1. If I could live anywhere in the world, …
  2. If I had been born a hundred years ago, …
  3. Had I known about … earlier, …
  4. Were I the head of my school, …
  5. Should I ever meet my favourite artist, …
