Cours d'anglais 5e : Décrire un tableau
Note cette fiche

in the topleft-hand cornerat the topin the topright-hand corneron the leftin the centre /in the middleon the rightin the bottomleft-hand cornerat the bottomin the bottomright-hand cornerin thebackgroundin themiddle groundin theforeground
  • in the foreground (au premier plan), in the middle ground (au second plan), in the background (à l’arrière-plan)
  • on the left, on the right (à gauche, à droite)
  • at the top, at the bottom (en haut, en bas)
  • in the centre / in the middle (au centre)
  • in the top left-hand corner (dans le coin en haut à gauche)
Pour retenir

Les plans (foreground, background) et les coins prennent in ; les côtés (left, right) prennent on ; le haut et le bas prennent at. Tu peux combiner : In the background, on the right, there is a castle.

Dire ce que l’on voit

Les structures de base

  • There is a boat / There are two cows. (Il y a un bateau / Il y a deux vaches.)
  • I can see a little dog. (Je vois un petit chien.)
  • The picture shows a market. (L’image montre un marché.)

Décrire les actions : be + -ing

Exemples

In the foreground, a woman is reading a letter.

On the right, two children are playing with a ball.

The man in the centre is wearing a black hat.

  1. Présente le document. This is a painting by John Constable. It is called The Hay Wain. He painted it in 1821.
  2. Donne l’idée générale. It is a landscape. It depicts the English countryside in summer.
  4. Donne ton impression. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful. I like the colours of the sky.

The Hay Wain, by John Constable (1821)

This painting by the English painter John Constable depicts a scene in the countryside. In the middle of the picture, there is a wooden cart, a hay wain, in a shallow river. Three horses are pulling it and two men are sitting on it. On the left, there is a small cottage with red walls, next to some big trees. In the foreground, a little dog is standing on the riverbank and looking at the cart. In the background, on the right, we can see green fields under a big cloudy sky. The colours are mostly green, brown and white. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful.

Astuce

Pour éviter de répéter there is, alterne avec I can see, we can notice (on peut remarquer), the painter has depicted ou commence par la position : On the left stands a cottage.

Les pièges des francophones

  • « Au premier plan » se dit in the foreground, jamais on the first plan.
  • « À gauche » se dit on the left, pas at the left ni in the left.
  • « En haut » se dit at the top, pas in the top (sauf avec corner : in the top left-hand corner).
