Avec ces exercices décrire un tableau devient un jeu : tu vas situer des éléments sur une image, choisir les bonnes prépositions, décrire des actions et organiser une vraie description. Une scène dessinée et un texte sur un tableau célèbre servent de documents.

Les exercices décrire un tableau

Exercice 1 : Le vocabulaire de l’art

Associe chaque mot anglais à sa traduction : a) un autoportrait, b) une nature morte, c) un peintre, d) un cadre, e) une toile, f) représenter, g) un paysage, h) un dessin.

Exercice 2 : In, on ou at ?

Complète avec in, on ou at.

  1. ___ the foreground, there is a fountain.
  2. The castle is ___ the right.
  3. There is a moon ___ the top of the picture.
  4. ___ the background, we can see mountains.
  5. A cat is sleeping ___ the bottom left-hand corner.
  6. Two girls are dancing ___ the centre.
  7. ___ the left, a man is selling flowers.
  8. The signature of the painter is ___ the bottom.
Exercice 3 : Situer sur l’image

Observe l’image, puis réponds aux questions par une phrase complète.

Une scène de campagne : en haut l’arrière-plan, en bas le premier plan.
  1. Where are the birds?
  2. Where is the sun?
  3. What can you see at the top, in the centre of the picture?
  4. Where is the tree?

  6. Where is the girl with her dog?
  7. What is there in the bottom right-hand corner?
  8. What can you see in the foreground, in the middle?
Exercice 4 : Foreground ou background ?

Dans un paysage, ce qui est proche est en bas et grand, ce qui est loin est en haut et petit. Complète avec foreground ou background.

  1. The big flowers at the bottom of the picture are in the ___.
  2. The tiny mountains near the sky are in the ___.
  3. A big dog is looking at us: it’s in the ___.
  4. Far away, in the ___, there is a little church.
  5. The clouds are in the ___.
Exercice 5 : Décrire les actions avec be + -ing

Mets le verbe entre parenthèses au présent en be + -ing.

  1. In the foreground, a woman (read) ___ a book.
  2. On the left, two boys (play) ___ football.
  3. The man in the centre (wear) ___ a blue coat.
  4. In the background, some cows (eat) ___ grass.
  5. A little girl (run) ___ after a cat.
  6. The old man (sit) ___ on a bench.
Exercice 6 : Remettre les mots dans l’ordre

Remets les mots dans l’ordre.

  1. painting / a / by / this / Turner / is
  2. depicts / it / storm / a / at sea
  3. the / in / foreground / is / there / a boat
  4. left / the / on / can / I / see / a lighthouse
  5. dark / are / colours / the / very
  6. atmosphere / the / scary / is
Exercice 7 : Corriger les erreurs

Chaque phrase contient une erreur. Corrige-la.

  1. On the first plan, there is a horse.
  2. At the left, we can see a tower.
  3. This is a painting of Van Gogh. (il l’a peint)
  4. In the top of the picture, there is a rainbow.
  5. A man is sit on a chair.
  6. There is a sky blue and bright.
Exercice 8 : La méthode en quatre étapes

Classe chaque phrase dans la bonne étape : A) présenter le document, B) donner l’idée générale, C) décrire les détails, D) donner son impression.

  1. The atmosphere is mysterious and a bit sad.
  2. This is a portrait by an English painter.
  3. On the right, a young woman is holding a candle.
  4. It depicts a family in their kitchen at night.
  5. I like this painting because the light is beautiful.
  6. In the background, there is a window with a dark sky.
  7. It was painted in 1765.
Exercice 9 : Compréhension d’une description

This is a painting by the British artist J.M.W. Turner. It depicts an old warship, The Fighting Temeraire, on the river Thames in 1838. In the foreground, on the left, a small black steamboat is pulling the big white sailing ship. The old ship is pale, like a ghost. On the right, the sun is setting and the sky is bright orange, yellow and red. In the background, we can see other boats and the river. The atmosphere is calm but a little sad, because the old ship is going to be destroyed. I like this painting because the colours of the sunset are magnificent.

Réponds en anglais ou par True / False avec justification.

  1. Who painted this picture?
  2. What does the painting depict?
  3. What is there in the foreground, on the left?
  4. The big ship is dark. True or false?
  5. Where is the sun?
  6. What colours is the sky?
  7. What is the atmosphere like? Why?
Exercice 10 : Traduire en anglais

Traduis en anglais.

  1. C’est un portrait d’une reine.
  2. Au premier plan, il y a un chien noir.
  3. À l’arrière-plan, on peut voir un château.
  4. En haut à droite, il y a des nuages.
  5. Un homme est assis au centre du tableau.
  6. L’atmosphère est calme et paisible.
Exercice 11 : Traduire en français

Traduis en français.

  1. This still life depicts fruit and a vase of flowers.
  2. In the bottom left-hand corner, there is the painter’s signature.
  3. The colours are bright and joyful.
  4. Two children are skating on a frozen lake in the middle ground.
  5. It’s a landscape by a famous English painter.
Exercice 12 : Production guidée

Décris l’image de l’exercice 3 en 6 à 8 phrases, en suivant la méthode du cours.

  1. Présente le document (It’s a picture / a drawing of…).
  2. Donne l’idée générale (It depicts…).
  3. Décris au moins quatre éléments avec leur position (in the foreground, on the left, at the top…).
  4. Imagine une action pour la fille et pour le chien avec be + -ing.
  5. Termine par ton impression sur l’atmosphère.
