A new start in Glasgow
When Ines moved from Lisbon to Glasgow at fifteen, she didn’t speak much English and she knew nobody. The first weeks were hard: she felt lost, and the rain didn’t help. Her teacher suggested she join the school’s running club. At first she hated getting up early, but little by little she made friends and her English improved. Last spring, she completed her first half-marathon. ‘Moving taught me that I’m stronger than I thought,’ she says. ‘If I had stayed in Lisbon, I would have been comfortable, but I would never have discovered this side of myself.’ Next year, she plans to apply to a sports university.
