A family of nations
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of countries, most of which were once part of the British Empire. Its members share a common language in many cases, similar legal systems and a commitment to democracy, although their histories and cultures differ widely. Countries as different as Canada, Nigeria, India and Jamaica belong to it. Every four years, the Commonwealth Games bring thousands of athletes together. Supporters say the organisation promotes cooperation and development. Critics argue that it hides the unequal relations of the past and has little real power.
