Nowadays, many teenagers spend hours on their phones. Should phones be banned at school?
- Les arguments pour (the pros, the advantages), chacun avec un exemple.
- Les arguments contre (the cons, the drawbacks), chacun avec un exemple.
- Conclusion : ton avis personnel, justifié.
|---|---|---|
| opposer deux points de vue | On the one hand, … On the other hand, … | D’un côté… de l’autre… |
| rapporter l’avis des autres | Some people think / believe / claim that… | Certains pensent / croient / affirment que… |
| Others argue that… | D’autres soutiennent que… | |
| nommer les camps | Supporters of … / Opponents of … | Les partisans de… / Les opposants à… |
| présenter un avantage | The main advantage is that… | Le principal avantage est que… |
| présenter un inconvénient | The main drawback is that… | Le principal inconvénient est que… |
| ordonner | First of all, … Secondly, … Finally, … | Tout d’abord… Ensuite… Enfin… |
On the one hand, video games can improve your reflexes. On the other hand, they can be addictive.
Supporters of school uniforms say that they reduce inequalities.
|---|---|---|
| I agree with you / with this idea. | I partly agree. | I disagree with you. |
| I’m for… / I’m in favour of… | It depends. | I’m against… |
| That’s true. Exactly! | I see your point, but… | I’m not convinced. |
| I think so. | I’m not sure. | I don’t think so. |
agree est un verbe : I agree, she agrees, I don’t agree. On ne dit jamais I am agree. On est d’accord with quelqu’un ou une idée, et l’on est for ou against quelque chose, suivi d’un nom ou d’un verbe en -ing : I’m against banning phones.
Justifier, illustrer, nuancer
|---|---|---|
| cause | because, as, since (+ phrase) ; because of (+ nom) | I’m against it because it’s unfair. |
| conséquence | so, that’s why, as a result | Phones distract students, so they learn less. |
| exemple | for example, for instance, such as | Some sports, such as rugby, can be dangerous. |
| ajout | moreover, what’s more, besides | What’s more, uniforms are cheaper. |
| opposition | but, however, although, whereas | Although homework is boring, it helps us remember. |
because + sujet + verbe : because it rains ; because of + nom : because of the rain. De même, although + phrase, mais despite + nom : although it was hard / despite the difficulty.
- To conclude, … / In conclusion, … (Pour conclure…)
- All in all, … / To sum up, … (Tout bien considéré… / En résumé…)
- In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the drawbacks.
- As far as I’m concerned, … (En ce qui me concerne…)
Should mobile phones be banned at school?
Nowadays, almost every teenager has a smartphone. But should phones be banned at school?
On the one hand, phones can be useful. For instance, students can check a word in an online dictionary. Moreover, parents can contact their children in an emergency.
On the other hand, phones distract students, so they concentrate less in class. What’s more, some students use social networks to bully others.
To conclude, although phones can be helpful, I think they should be switched off during lessons, because school is a place to learn and to talk to real people.
Repère dans ce texte : la question dans l’introduction, On the one hand / On the other hand pour séparer les parties, un exemple avec For instance, des ajouts avec Moreover et What’s more, une conséquence avec so, et une conclusion nuancée avec although et because.
