Ces exercices analyser une image t’entraînent à situer les éléments, à décrire les actions, à nuancer tes hypothèses et à dégager le message d’une affiche. Une affiche dessinée sert de support aux exercices 3 et 13.

Exercices analyser une image : de la description à l’interprétation

Exercice 1 : le vocabulaire de l’image

Associe chaque mot anglais à sa traduction (a à h).

  7. the viewer
  8. a painting

Exercice 2 : situer dans l’image

Complète avec : in, at, on (une préposition par blanc).

  1. ___ the foreground, a dog is sleeping.
  2. The title is written ___ the top of the poster.
  3. There is a tree ___ the left.
  4. ___ the background, we can see mountains.
  5. A small boat is sailing ___ the bottom right-hand corner.
  6. ___ the right, two girls are laughing.
Exercice 3 : observer une affiche

Observe l’affiche puis réponds en anglais par des phrases complètes.

Une affiche inventée, dans le style des campagnes des années 1940.
  1. What is written at the top of the poster?
  2. Where is the sun?
  3. What can you see in the background, on the left?
  4. Who is in the centre of the poster and what is she holding?
  5. Where are the vegetables?
  6. What is written at the bottom?
Exercice 4 : reconnaître le document

Quel type de document est décrit ? a photo, a painting, a cartoon, an advert, a propaganda poster, a comic strip.

  1. An oil work by a Victorian artist, exhibited in a museum.
  2. A drawing in a newspaper that makes fun of a prime minister.
  3. An image that encourages people to buy a new pair of trainers.
  4. A story told in six panels with speech bubbles.
  5. A picture taken by a reporter during a demonstration.
  6. A wartime image telling citizens: “Join the army now!”
Exercice 5 : décrire les actions

Mets le verbe entre parenthèses au présent en be + -ing.

  1. In the foreground, a woman (hold) ___ a baby.
  2. Two men (shake) ___ hands.
  3. The children (run) ___ towards the sea.
  4. A policeman (look) ___ at the crowd.
  5. The sun (set) ___ behind the hills.
  6. Some people (wave) ___ flags.
Exercice 6 : nuancer ses hypothèses

Réécris chaque phrase avec l’outil indiqué, sans changer l’idée.

  1. Perhaps she is a nurse. (might)
  2. I am almost sure he is a farmer: he is driving a tractor. (must)
  3. It is impossible that it is night: the sky is bright blue. (can’t)
  4. The man gives the impression of being angry. (seem to)
  5. Probably the scene takes place in London. (probably)
  6. Perhaps they are waiting for a bus. (could)
Exercice 7 : look, look like ou look as if ?

Complète avec look(s), look(s) like ou look(s) as if.

  1. The girl ___ worried.
  2. This building ___ a prison.
  3. The sky ___ it is going to rain.
  4. The soldiers ___ exhausted.
  5. He ___ a famous actor.
  6. The crowd ___ they are celebrating a victory.
Exercice 8 : couleurs et atmosphère

Associe chaque élément à l’effet qu’il produit le plus probablement (a à f).

  1. bright warm colours (red, orange)
  2. dark grey and blue tones
  3. a low-angle shot of a leader
  4. a high-angle shot of a lonely child
  5. a close-up of a tearful face
  6. a strong contrast of light on one figure

a. the leader looks powerful – b. the child looks fragile – c. energy, enthusiasm – d. sadness, a gloomy atmosphere – e. the eye is drawn to that figure – f. the viewer shares the emotion

Exercice 9 : comprendre l’analyse d’une affiche

Lis cette analyse puis réponds en anglais.

This poster was published in Britain during the Second World War. In the centre, a tall soldier is pointing straight at the viewer. He is shown from a low angle, so he looks strong and determined. The background is plain red, which makes him stand out. At the top, the slogan “Your country needs YOU” is printed in bold white letters. The artist clearly wants to make every young man feel personally responsible. The direct look and the imperative tone leave no room for hesitation. Such posters must have been very effective, since thousands of volunteers joined the army.

  1. When and where was the poster published?
  2. What is the soldier doing?
  3. Why does he look strong?
  4. What is the effect of the plain red background?
  5. What is the intention of the artist?
  6. Which modal expresses a strong hypothesis in the last sentence?
Exercice 10 : corriger les erreurs

Chaque phrase contient une erreur. Recopie-la correctement.

  1. On the picture, there is a cat.
  2. At the foreground, we can see a car.
  3. The woman looks a teacher.
  4. Two boys plays football on the right.
  5. He might to be a doctor.
  6. The man seems be very happy.
Exercice 11 : remettre une analyse dans l’ordre

Remets ces phrases dans l’ordre logique d’une analyse.

  1. Personally, I find this photo very moving.
  2. This is a black and white photo taken in 1963 in Washington.
  3. In the foreground, a young girl is holding a sign.
  4. The photographer probably wants to show the hope of a whole generation.
  5. In the background, there is a huge crowd.
Exercice 12 : traduire en anglais
  1. Au premier plan, un homme lit un journal.
  2. À l’arrière-plan, on voit une église.
  3. Elle a l’air triste.
  4. On dirait une vieille photo.
  5. Il se peut qu’ils soient perdus.
  6. L’artiste veut dénoncer la guerre.
Exercice 13 : production guidée

Rédige en anglais l’analyse de l’affiche de l’exercice 3 (100 à 130 mots), en suivant ces étapes :

  1. Présente le document (type, époque supposée).
  2. Décris-le d’un plan à l’autre.
  3. Commente les couleurs et le slogan.
  4. Formule au moins deux hypothèses (might, must, seems to…).
  5. Explique l’intention et donne ton avis.
