Be + -ing : exercices progressifs pour t’entraîner à raconter ce qui était en train de se passer dans le passé. Tu vas conjuguer was et were, choisir entre while et when, puis décider entre le prétérit simple et le prétérit en be + -ing dans de vraies petites histoires.

Les exercices

Be + -ing : exercices du plus simple au récit

Les exercices sur le prétérit en be + -ing vont du plus simple au plus difficile. Fais-les dans l’ordre et vérifie ensuite avec le corrigé.

Exercice 1 : was ou were ?

Complète avec was ou were.

  1. I ___ listening to music.
  2. My parents ___ watching the news.
  3. The dog ___ barking all night.
  4. You ___ talking too loudly.
  5. Emma and I ___ walking to school.
  6. It ___ snowing in the mountains.
  7. We ___ having lunch in the garden.
  8. Jack ___ playing a video game.
Exercice 2 : la forme en -ing

Mets le verbe entre parenthèses au prétérit en be + -ing. Attention à l’orthographe.

  1. She (swim) ___ in the lake.
  2. They (dance) ___ at the party.
  3. I (write) ___ an email to my cousin.
  4. The children (run) ___ in the playground.
  5. He (lie) ___ on the sofa.
  6. We (sit) ___ near the window.
  7. You (make) ___ a cake.
  8. My sister (shop) ___ in town.
Exercice 3 : à la forme négative

Mets les phrases à la forme négative.

  1. I was sleeping.
  2. They were laughing.
  3. Lucy was wearing a hat.
  4. We were working in the library.
  5. The baby was crying.
  6. You were listening to me.
Exercice 4 : poser des questions

Pose la question qui correspond à la partie soulignée par des crochets [ ].

  1. She was reading [a comic].
  2. They were going [to the beach].
  3. Tom was crying [because he was lost].
  4. I was talking [to my grandmother].
  5. We were waiting [for the bus].
  6. He was doing his homework [at nine o’clock]. (question fermée : Was…?)
Exercice 5 : while ou when ?

Complète avec while ou when.

  1. I was cooking ___ the fire alarm went off.
  2. ___ she was jogging, she lost her keys.
  3. The phone rang ___ I was having a bath.
  4. We were playing cards ___ the lights went out.
  5. ___ my parents were sleeping, I watched a film.
  6. He broke his arm ___ he was skiing.
  7. ___ the teacher came in, the pupils were shouting.
Exercice 6 : action longue, action brève

Mets un verbe au prétérit en be + -ing et l’autre au prétérit simple.

  1. I (walk) ___ in the park when I (see) ___ a fox.
  2. She (have) ___ a shower when the phone (ring) ___.
  3. While we (watch) ___ TV, somebody (knock) ___ at the door.
  4. They (play) ___ football when it (start) ___ to rain.
  5. When I (arrive) ___, my friends (dance) ___.
  6. He (cut) ___ his finger while he (prepare) ___ dinner.
  7. While Kate (read) ___, her cat (jump) ___ on the table.
  8. We (drive) ___ home when we (hear) ___ a strange noise.
Exercice 7 : remets les mots dans l’ordre

Reconstitue les phrases.

  1. was / I / my / room / tidying
  2. were / the / you / what / doing / at / weekend / ?
  3. raining / wasn’t / it / morning / this
  4. when / was / sleeping / the / she / rang / alarm
  5. were / they / where / going / ?
  6. while / was / my / cooking / father / I / the / laid / table
Exercice 8 : corrige les erreurs

Chaque phrase contient une erreur. Recopie-la correctement.

  1. We was playing tennis.
  2. I watching a film at 8 p.m.
  3. She was knowing the answer.
  4. They were swiming in the sea.
  5. Were you sleep when I called?
  6. I was reading when the doorbell was ringing.
  7. He wasn’t listen to the teacher.
Exercice 9 : que faisaient-ils à 18 h ?

Observe le tableau et écris une phrase pour chaque personne : à 6 p.m. hier, que faisait-elle ? Puis réponds aux questions 7 et 8.

Exercice 10 : traduis en anglais

Traduis ces phrases en anglais.

  1. Je lisais quand tu as appelé.
  2. Il ne pleuvait pas ce matin.
  3. Que faisiez-vous à midi ?
  4. Pendant que ma mère conduisait, je dormais.
  5. Nous attendions le train quand nous avons vu Paul.
  6. Elle ne m’écoutait pas.
Exercice 11 : compréhension d’un récit

Lis le texte puis réponds aux questions en anglais par des phrases complètes.

Last Saturday evening, Chloe was alone at home. Her parents were having dinner with friends and her brother was staying at a friend’s house. It was a stormy night: the wind was blowing hard and rain was hitting the windows. Chloe was watching a mystery film on the sofa while her cat was sleeping next to her. Suddenly, the lights went out. Chloe screamed! While she was looking for a torch in the kitchen, she heard a noise at the front door. She was shaking with fear. Then the door opened… It was her brother. He had forgotten his pyjamas!

  1. Where were Chloe’s parents?
  2. What was the weather like?
  3. What was Chloe doing before the lights went out?
  4. What was the cat doing?
  5. What happened while Chloe was looking for a torch?
  6. Who opened the door?
Exercice 12 : raconte à ton tour

Écris un court récit de 6 à 8 phrases qui commence par It was a quiet Sunday afternoon… Utilise au moins quatre verbes au prétérit en be + -ing, un while et un when. Aide-toi de ces étapes :

  1. Décris le temps qu’il faisait.
  2. Dis ce que faisaient deux membres de ta famille.
  3. Dis ce que tu faisais toi-même.
  4. Raconte l’événement soudain (when…).
  5. Raconte ce qui s’est passé pendant une autre action (while…).
  6. Termine ton histoire en une phrase.
