Le corrigé wish, if only et I’d rather
Correction de l’exercice 1 : Regretter le présent- I wish I spoke Spanish.
- I wish my flat were (was) bigger. ou I wish my flat weren’t so small.
- I wish I could vote. : capacité, donc could.
- I wish my parents understood me.
- I wish it weren’t (wasn’t) raining. : la forme be + -ing se conserve.
- I wish we didn’t have to leave now.
- I wish I had gone to the concert.
- She wishes she hadn’t told him the secret. : affirmative dans la réalité, négative dans le regret.
- We wish we hadn’t missed the train.
- I wish I had listened to my teacher.
- They wish they hadn’t sold their house.
- He wishes he could have come to the party. : capacité passée, could have + participe.
- knew : situation présente (now).
- would stop : agacement envers une autre personne.
- had taken : regret passé (last year).
- were : état présent, would impossible avec be ici.
- would stop : on souhaite un changement.
- had : situation présente (these days).
- had stayed : regret passé (in 1950).
- If only I were old enough to drive!

- didn’t tell : autre sujet, donc prétérit.
- stay : même sujet, donc base verbale.

- wishes : irréel présent, avec le -s de la 3e personne.
- hope : hope to + base verbale.

- I wish I were rich. : pas de wish + I would.
- I wish I had more time.
- I wish I hadn’t eaten so much yesterday. : regret passé.
- I wish I could fly. : c’est irréel, donc wish.
- I’d rather you didn’t smoke here.

- He regrets not bringing a warmer coat: « I wish I had brought a warmer coat. »
- He wishes she could see the city.
- « I wish the landlord would fix the heater. » It expresses irritation, because the landlord never listens.
- « Sometimes I wish I had stayed in Kingston with you. » No: he remembers why he came, so the regret is only temporary.
- He would prefer her not to worry: « I’d rather you didn’t worry. »

Comment progresser après ce corrigé
Si vous vous êtes trompé surtout dans l’exercice 3, entraînez-vous à repérer l’indicateur de temps (now, yesterday, last year) avant de choisir le verbe. Si l’exercice 7 vous a posé problème, relisez la règle du recul d’un temps et la liste des pièges. Enfin, relisez votre production de l’exercice 11 à voix haute : un regret passé doit toujours contenir had.
