| Key facts | En chiffres |
|---|---|
| Area (superficie) | about 9.8 million km², almost 18 times the size of France |
| Population | about 340 million people |
| Borders (frontières) | Canada to the north, Mexico to the south |
| Coasts (littoraux) | the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico |
| The largest state | Alaska |
| The most populated state | California |
| The smallest state | Rhode Island |
| The highest peak | Denali, Alaska (6,190 m) |
Chaque État a son drapeau, ses lois, son gouverneur et souvent un surnom : California is « the Golden State », Texas is « the Lone Star State », Florida is « the Sunshine State ».
The United States prend un verbe au singulier : The United States is a huge country. Les Américains disent aussi the US, the States ou America.
| Region | Some states | Landscapes and identity |
|---|---|---|
| New England / the Northeast | Massachusetts, Maine, New York | old towns, forests with red leaves in autumn (the fall), big cities on the East Coast |
| The South | Georgia, Louisiana, Florida | hot and humid climate, swamps, jazz and country music, Southern hospitality |
| The Midwest | Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas | the Great Plains, cornfields, the Great Lakes, « America’s heartland » |
| The Southwest | Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas | deserts, canyons, cactus, Native American and Mexican influences |
| The West | California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington | the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific coast, forests, big tech cities |
Maine is in the northeast of the country, on the Atlantic coast. Kansas is in the middle of the Great Plains, far from the sea.
The Grand Canyon is in Arizona. Over millions of years, the Colorado River carved it into the rock. It is about 446 km long and more than 1.8 km deep in some places.
The Rocky Mountains, or the Rockies, stretch for about 4,800 km from Canada to New Mexico.
On distingue the East Coast (New York, Boston, Miami), the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) et the Gulf Coast (Houston, New Orleans). The West Coast has long sandy beaches and high cliffs, while Florida has warm water and swamps called the Everglades.
- When it’s noon in New York, it’s 9 a.m. in Los Angeles.
- Chicago is one hour behind New York.
- Alaska is four hours behind the East Coast.
Chicago, America’s pulse
Chicago, in the state of Illinois, is the third largest city in the United States, with about 2.7 million inhabitants. It stands on the shore of Lake Michigan, right in the middle of the country. That is why people call it « America’s pulse »: highways, railways and flights from all directions meet here, and O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world. Chicago is also the birthplace of the skyscraper: the first one was built there in 1885. Today, the Willis Tower is 442 metres high. The city is famous for its blues and jazz clubs, its deep-dish pizza and its nickname, « the Windy City ». It is also the starting point of the legendary Route 66, which runs to Santa Monica, on the Pacific coast.
- in Texas (dans un État), mais on the coast, on the East Coast.
- Les États-Unis : 50 states, capitale Washington, D.C., environ 340 million people.
- Grandes régions : the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West.
- Paysages : the Rockies, the Grand Canyon, the Great Plains, the Mississippi, the Great Lakes, trois littoraux.
- Six time zones : midi à New York = 9 a.m.
