Ces exercices son th s’adressent autant à tes yeux qu’à ta bouche : chaque fois que tu écris une réponse, prononce-la à voix haute, la langue bien placée entre les dents. Les premiers exercices servent à reconnaître /θ/ et /ð/, les suivants à les employer dans des phrases.

Exercice 1 : sourd ou sonore ?

Classe chaque mot dans la bonne colonne : /θ/ (sourd) ou /ð/ (sonore).

Exercice 2 : trouve l’intrus

Dans chaque groupe, un mot ne se prononce pas avec le même son th que les autres. Lequel ?

  2. the – that – those – thin
  3. father – brother – author – other
  4. both – north – south – smooth
  5. fifth – sixth – breathe – tenth
  6. then – than – them – theatre
Exercice 3 : les paires de mots

Un élève a mal prononcé un mot en th : voici ce qu’on a entendu. Écris le mot en th qu’il voulait dire.

  1. sink (« I ___ you’re right. »)
  2. tree (« I’ve got ___ sisters. »)
  3. mouse (« Open your ___, please. »)
  4. day (« ___ live in Dublin. »)
  5. sick (« This book is very ___. It has 900 pages. »)
  6. den (« First we ate, ___ we went out. »)
  7. taught (« I ___ it was Monday. »)
  8. breeze (« Don’t forget to ___ ! »)
Exercice 4 : lire la transcription

Associe chaque transcription phonétique au mot correspondant de la liste : those – month – Thursday – weather – three – mother – both – there.

Exercice 5 : les faux th

Dans certains mots, th se prononce simplement /t/. Classe ces mots : th = /t/ ou th = /θ/.

Exercice 6 : des mots en th

Complète chaque phrase avec un mot qui contient th, puis dis si ce th est /θ/ ou /ð/.

  2. 13 in letters is ___.
  3. Your mum’s husband is your ___.
  4. There are twelve ___ in a year.
  5. You brush your ___ every morning and every evening.
  6. I don’t want this pen, I want ___ one over there.
  7. Someone gives you a present. You say: “___ you!”
  8. The opposite of “thick” is ___.
Exercice 7 : nom ou verbe ?

Choisis le bon mot. Attention : le nom se termine par /θ/, le verbe ou le mot en -the par /ð/.

  1. Take a deep (breath / breathe) before you dive.
  2. Fish can (breath / breathe) under water.
  3. After the race, I was out of (breath / breathe).
  4. I’m wearing my new (cloth / clothes) today.
  5. Clean the table with a wet (cloth / clothes).
  6. I had a hot (bath / bathe) after the match.
Exercice 8 : chasse aux th dans les virelangues

Lis chaque phrase à voix haute. Puis recopie les mots qui contiennent /θ/ d’un côté et ceux qui contiennent /ð/ de l’autre.

  1. Three thin thieves thought a thousand thoughts.
  2. Father gathers the feathers together.
  3. This is the thirteenth birthday of my brother.
  4. They think that the weather is worse in the north.
  5. Both of them thanked their mother on Thursday.
  6. Is there anything else in the bathroom?
Exercice 9 : un dialogue plein de th

Lis le dialogue, puis réponds aux questions.

Beth: Ethan, it’s Thursday! Don’t you remember? It’s Mother’s birthday today.

Ethan: Oh no! I thought it was next month. What can we do?

Beth: Let’s make a cake together. There are three eggs in the fridge.

Ethan: Good idea. And then we can write a card: “Thank you for everything.”

Beth: Perfect. But brush your teeth first, your mouth is full of chocolate!

  1. What day is it?
  2. Whose birthday is it?
  3. When did Ethan think the birthday was?
  4. How many eggs are there in the fridge?
  5. What will they write on the card?
  6. Trouve dans le dialogue deux mots en /ð/ et deux mots en /θ/ qui ne sont pas dans les questions 1 à 5.
Exercice 10 : traduis puis lis à voix haute

Traduis en anglais. Chaque phrase contient au moins deux sons th.

  1. Merci beaucoup.
  2. Mon frère a treize ans.
  3. Ils pensent que c’est leur père.
  4. Le troisième jeudi du mois.
  5. Ces vêtements sont à eux.
  6. Il fait plus chaud que le mois dernier.
Exercice 11 : invente ton virelangue

Écris un virelangue de 8 à 12 mots qui contient au moins cinq mots en th, avec des /θ/ et des /ð/. Souligne les /θ/ et entoure les /ð/, puis entraîne-toi à le dire trois fois de suite sans te tromper.

  1. Ton virelangue.
  2. La liste de tes mots en /θ/.
  3. La liste de tes mots en /ð/.
  4. Une traduction en français de ton virelangue.
  5. Le temps que tu mets pour le dire trois fois de suite.
