Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born inventor who is famous for the telephone.
She lives in London and she still writes novels.
Les verbes clés de la vie
| Étape | Anglais | Français |
|---|---|---|
| naissance | was / were born | est né(e) |
| enfance | grew up (grow up) | a grandi |
| études | went to school, studied, left school | est allé(e) à l’école, a étudié, a quitté l’école |
| déménagement | moved to | a déménagé à / s’est installé(e) à |
| réalisations | invented, wrote, discovered, won | a inventé, a écrit, a découvert, a gagné |
| mort | died | est mort(e) |
« Je suis né » se dit I was born, avec was : jamais « I am born » ni « I born ». Pour une personne : Ada Lovelace was born in London. Pour plusieurs : The Brontë sisters were born in Yorkshire.
Roald Dahl grew up in Wales, but his parents were Norwegian.
He became a pilot during the Second World War.
She married a scientist and they had three children.
On dit he married her (sans préposition) ou he got married to her, mais jamais « he married with her ».
Les dates et les marqueurs de temps
In, on ou at ?
| Préposition | Emploi | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| in | année, mois, siècle, décennie | in 1876, in March, in the 19th century, in the 1960s |
| on | date précise, jour | on 3 March 1847, on Monday |
| at | âge, moment | at the age of 23, at the end of his life |
Lire les dates
Les années se lisent par paires : 1847 se dit eighteen forty-seven, 1922 nineteen twenty-two. Depuis 2000, on dit souvent two thousand and five, puis twenty twenty-four. Le jour est un ordinal : 3 March se lit the third of March.
Les marqueurs de durée et de succession
- at the age of ten / when he was ten (à l’âge de dix ans / quand il avait dix ans)
- two years later (deux ans plus tard)
- from 1870 to 1880 (de 1870 à 1880)
- for twenty years (pendant vingt ans)
- until his death (jusqu’à sa mort)
- a hundred years ago (il y a cent ans)
Bell married Mabel Hubbard. She was deaf. devient Bell married Mabel Hubbard, who was deaf.
He invented the telephone. It changed the world. devient He invented the telephone, which changed the world.
Ada Lovelace was a mathematician who worked with Charles Babbage.
She wrote notes on a machine which could do calculations.
Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician who is often called the first computer programmer. She was born in London on 10 December 1815. Her father was the famous poet Lord Byron, but she never really knew him. She grew up with her mother, who made her study mathematics and science.
At the age of 17, she met Charles Babbage, an inventor who was working on a calculating machine. In 1843, she translated an article about his Analytical Engine and added long notes, which included a method to make the machine calculate numbers. Many experts think it was the first computer program.
Unfortunately, she died of illness in 1852, when she was only 36. Today, a programming language is named Ada after her, and every October, Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women in science.
Les pièges des francophones
- She was born in 1815 et non « she is born ».
- at the age of 17 et non « at 17 years old ».
- in 1843 (année) mais on 10 December 1815 (date complète).
- two years later et non « two years after » en fin de phrase.
- who pour une personne, jamais « which ».
- Verbes clés au prétérit : was born, grew up, studied, moved to, became, married, invented, died.
- in + année ou mois, on + date précise, at + âge.
- Marqueurs : at the age of, two years later, from… to, for, until, ago.
- who pour les personnes, which pour les choses.
