Une critique (a review) répond à une seule question du lecteur : Should I watch it? Should I read it?
|---|---|---|
| a director | an author / a writer | un réalisateur / un auteur |
| the cast, the actors | the characters | la distribution / les personnages |
| the soundtrack | a chapter | la bande originale / un chapitre |
| the special effects | the style, the plot | les effets spéciaux / le style, l’intrigue |
| a thriller, a comedy, a sci-fi film, an animated film | a novel, a fantasy novel, a graphic novel | un thriller, une comédie… / un roman, un roman graphique |
« The Lost Island » is a fantasy novel written by Sarah Moon in 2021.
Directed by Leo Grant, this animated film is set in a futuristic Tokyo.
Pour présenter, utilise le participe passé passif : written by, directed by, played by, et be set in pour le cadre : The story is set in Scotland in 1850.
The film tells the story of Mia, a fifteen-year-old girl who discovers a secret door in her school. Behind it, she finds a world where time has stopped. She must find a way back before it is too late… but will she want to go home?
- Pour commencer : It tells the story of… / It is about… / The main character is…
- Pour enchaîner : at first, then, but one day, when, suddenly.
I won’t tell you the end!
Un avis vaut par ses arguments : chaque adjectif doit être suivi d’une raison (because, as, thanks to, the best part is…).
|---|---|---|
| gripping (captivant) | boring (ennuyeux) | a bit slow at times |
| moving (émouvant) | disappointing (décevant) | quite predictable but fun |
| hilarious (hilarant) | predictable (prévisible) | not as good as the book |
| breathtaking (époustouflant) | confusing (confus) | worth seeing despite its flaws |
| well-written, convincing | too long, unconvincing | the ending is rushed |
I found the story gripping because every chapter ends with a mystery.
The special effects are breathtaking, but the plot is rather predictable.
Although the film is a bit long, the actors are so convincing that you forget the time.
Pour nuancer, combine but, however, although et even if. Pour intensifier : really, absolutely, so… that. Une critique nuancée paraît toujours plus fiable qu’un « it’s the best film ever » sans raison.
Étape 4 : recommander
On termine en disant à qui l’œuvre plaira, souvent avec une note : four stars out of five.
- I’d recommend it to anyone who likes adventure.
- It’s worth watching / It’s worth reading. (Ça vaut la peine d’être vu / lu.)
- Don’t miss it! / Give it a go! (Ne le ratez pas ! / Essayez-le !)
- If you enjoyed X, you’ll love this one. (Si vous avez aimé X, vous adorerez celui-ci.)
- I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you are a big fan of the series.
Après recommend something to someone, on met to devant la personne.
Une critique modèle commentée
The Last Lighthouse – ★★★★☆
« The Last Lighthouse » is an adventure film directed by Nora Blake and released in 2024. It is set on a tiny Scottish island in the 1950s.
It tells the story of Callum, a shy boy who spends the summer with his grandfather, the lighthouse keeper. One stormy night, a strange ship appears on the horizon… I won’t say more!
I really enjoyed this film. The landscapes are breathtaking and the young actor is so convincing that I believed every word. The soundtrack is also very moving. However, the middle of the film is a bit slow, and some scenes are predictable.
All in all, it’s definitely worth watching. I’d recommend it to families and to anyone who loves the sea.
On retrouve les quatre étapes : présentation (directed by, set in), résumé au présent sans la fin, avis positif et réserve introduite par However, recommandation avec worth watching et I’d recommend it to.
L’essentiel à retenir
- Quatre étapes : present, summarise, give your opinion, recommend.
- Présenter : written by, directed by, it is set in.
- Justifier chaque avis avec because, as, thanks to, nuancer avec but, however, although.
- Varier les adjectifs : gripping, moving, hilarious, disappointing, predictable.
- Recommander : It’s worth watching, I’d recommend it to…
