Ces exercices if + prétérit t’apprennent à construire des hypothèses imaginaires, à donner des conseils avec If I were you et à choisir entre will et would. Laisse-toi aller à rêver dans le dernier exercice !

Exercice 1 : Mets le verbe au prétérit

Complète la proposition avec if.

  1. If I ___ (have) a horse, I would ride it every day.
  2. If we ___ (live) in Scotland, we would wear kilts at weddings.
  3. If she ___ (know) his number, she would call him.
  4. If they ___ (win) the match, they would be champions.
  5. If he ___ (speak) Japanese, he would work in Tokyo.
  6. If you ___ (go) to bed earlier, you wouldn’t be tired.
Exercice 2 : Complète avec would + base verbale
  1. If I had a million pounds, I ___ (buy) a castle.
  2. If it were sunny, we ___ (go) to the beach.
  3. If my parents let me, I ___ (have) a snake.
  4. If she saw a spider, she ___ (scream).
  5. If we didn’t have school, we ___ (play) video games all day.
  6. If he trained more, he ___ (not lose) every race.
Exercice 3 : Was ou were ?

Complète avec la forme recommandée à l’écrit.

  1. If I ___ a bird, I would fly over the ocean.
  2. If it ___ warmer, we would swim.
  3. If she ___ older, she could drive.
  4. If I ___ you, I would apologise.
  5. If he ___ here, he would help us.
  6. If the museum ___ open, we would visit it.
Exercice 4 : Réel ou imaginaire ?

Choisis la bonne forme selon le sens.

  1. If it (rains / rained) tomorrow, we will stay at home.
  2. If I (am / were) a millionaire, I would help poor people.
  3. If you (study / studied) tonight, you will pass the test.
  4. If dinosaurs still lived, the world (will / would) be dangerous.
  5. If she (comes / came) to the party, I’ll be happy.
  6. If I had three arms, I (will / would) play two instruments at once.
  7. If the bus is late, we (will / would) take a taxi.
Exercice 5 : Donne un conseil avec If I were you

Réponds à chaque problème avec If I were you, I would / wouldn’t…

  1. I’ve got a terrible headache. (take an aspirin)
  2. I always fail my English tests. (revise every day)
  3. My best friend is angry with me. (talk to him)
  4. I want to eat ten chocolate bars. (not do that)
  5. I’m bored. (read a good book)
  6. I’m going to London in winter. (take a warm coat)
Exercice 6 : Corrige les erreurs
  1. If I would have a dog, I would call it Rex.
  2. If she was you, she would stop.
  3. If we had time, we will visit the museum.
  4. If he knew the answer, he would told us.
  5. If I live in New York, I would go to Times Square.
  6. If they didn’t lived so far, we would see them more often.
Exercice 7 : Remets les mots dans l’ordre

Exercice 8 : Document : le rêve de Chloe

Lis le texte puis réponds en anglais par des phrases complètes.

Chloe is fourteen and she lives in a small village in Cornwall. She has never been to the USA, but she dreams about New York. « If I were in New York, I would go up the Empire State Building first. Then I would have a picnic in Central Park and I would take a yellow cab to Times Square. If I had enough money, I would see a musical on Broadway. My mum says that if we saved money for two years, we could go there together. If we went, I would be the happiest girl in Cornwall! »

  1. Where does Chloe live?
  2. Has she ever been to New York?
  3. What would she do first in New York?
  4. What would she do if she had enough money?
  5. What would they have to do to go there?
  6. How would Chloe feel if they went?
Exercice 9 : Traduis en anglais
  1. Si j’avais un chat, je l’appellerais Biscuit.
  2. Si elle était ici, elle serait contente.
  3. À ta place, je partirais maintenant.
  4. S’il faisait beau, nous irions au parc.
  5. Que ferais-tu si tu gagnais au loto ?
  6. Si je pouvais voler, j’irais en Australie.
Exercice 10 : Traduis en français
  1. If I were taller, I would play basketball.
  2. We would go out if it didn’t rain.
  3. If you lived closer, we would see each other every day.
  4. If I were you, I wouldn’t eat that.
  5. She would be angry if she knew.
  6. What would you say if you met the Queen of the Netherlands?
Exercice 11 : Relie la condition et la conséquence

Associe le début (1 à 6) à la fin (a à f) pour former des hypothèses logiques.

  1. If I were invisible,
  2. If cats could talk,
  3. If I lived on the moon,
  4. If there were no phones,
  5. If I were a teacher,
  6. If I had a robot,

a. I would give no homework. b. it would do my chores. c. they would ask for more food. d. I would play tricks on my brother. e. I would see the Earth from my window. f. people would write more letters.

Exercice 12 : Production guidée

Réponds à chaque question par une phrase complète avec if + prétérit et would.

  1. What would you do if you were in New York?
  2. What would you buy if you had 1,000 pounds?
  3. Where would you live if you could choose?
  4. Who would you meet if you could meet anyone?
  5. What would you change if you were the head teacher?
  6. What superpower would you choose, and why?
